A moment of peace.
As he overlooks the view of Central Park West from his penthouse apartment stretch balcony, Larry Tact enjoys a time of night that is refreshing. Pedestrians largely clear out in this area for the night, choosing to go down Broadway or straddle Lincoln Center, several blocks over. That distant allowed for a stillness, broken up by the gusts of a brisk wind that’s got a little kick to it. After undoing a couple of buttons on his lavender shirt, letting go of the last vestiges of a lengthy day at Tact Enterprises, Larry glances back into the living room beyond the sliding doors of the balcony. There sits his wife, Cindy, having finished putting their daughter, Morgan, down for the night. The process had become less predictable with toddler tantrums, and Larry took comfort when he had a chance to hold their little girl. Even after an erratic day, or week, to get to that oasis of just holding and rocking her became cathartic.
Larry grabs a glass of water off a table set on the balcony for idle chatter. He sips from it before heading inside and taking a seat next to his wife.
“You feeling better after the recent run of matches, hon?” Cindy asks, more out of habit than concern. She trusts Larry isn’t overloading his workload most months, but they had hit an exception the past few weeks.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind with Uncivil War, UGWC Infinity, and the Denzel Porter Invitational,” Larry admits. “I didn’t exactly fare so well, dropping two of those three, including a shot at a World Champion…” He knows his wife will detect the hint of disappointment in his tone, and the hint of it flashing within the space between his creasing eyebrows.
They knew each other’s cues and she wasn’t about to miss a beat. Still, she knew Larry has his own way of processing. “You may not have gotten the win there, hon, but you broke the ice with a victory over him last year. You can’t deny he’s been on his hottest run in maybe two years.”
“Sure, and Sebastian just the same,” Larry grunts, referring to another rival he’s faced on a blistering tear. “If I want to maintain my position at the top of these companies, I need to make a statement.”
“You know what? You’re absolutely right,” Cindy doesn’t hesitate, and she sees Larry give her a look that’s scanning beyond the surface of her reply. “And you did. Look at TPW. You yourself said it. You went out at Uncivil War, with a team that wasn’t any guarantee to come together in the face of too-fresh scars and infighting, But you made the most of their strengths, and everyone saw the promise of what coming together would mean.” She runs a hand over Larry’s back in a soothing motion.
Larry nods, “We all played a part in it. Not one of them on Team TPW wasn’t committed to taking on WGWF when we left the Compound. Afterwards… not exactly the way I drew it up,” his mind immediately thinks of the Fortunate Ones in their dressing room, when Xavier Lux went in to chat. Larry knew it wasn’t smart letting JMONT be left to his own devices, but he couldn’t risk a legitimate confrontation the night of the match. All things considered, the glue held together just long enough.
“They may not all be too friendly with each other, or even want much to do with you. Maybe you could’ve given them more of a heads-up on what they were getting into at Lazarus’ Compound,” Cindy slips her hand under the back of the shirt collar, squeezing his traps. “But the point wasn’t to make friends, right? It was to have those wrestlers ready to overcome the team WGWF put out there. How did that turn out?”
“Yes, we took the match. Junko really pulled through for us,” Larry takes a sip from his water. “She was as impressive as I’ve seen her in TPW, including those matches with Montuouri.” It was a scary sight to see her trudge back to the ring and finish off Team WGWF. As much as he respects her, she’s clearly shown the level she’s capable of competing at.
“I know it was a team effort, but you helped rally TPW. Don’t forget to give yourself some credit every now and again. It seems like a pretty big deal, and who knows where it could take you from here,” Cindy gives one last squeeze before moving her out onto his shoulder.
Before Larry responds, Princess Dragon hops up onto the sofa, her lean and muscular frame stretching out her hind legs before she slumps down between the two of them with a sneeze and quick shake of her brown-grey, fur covered body. Cindy moves her hand off from Larry’s shoulder to pet PD.
Larry swirls some water in his glass. “This has been a string of high profile matches in a short time. The year has began in earnest, and if anything, I’ve already notched one signature win. With Peter Vaughn reclaiming the TPW International Championship, and Chris Page cashing in his briefcase from the Porter Games, there’s a lot of buzz in that title picture…” he nods, considering another longstanding rivalry. “JMONT and Junko will be going one last round to headline Thunder in Paradise 3. There are a lot of ends being sewn up, and it’s going to pave the way for more big matches on the calendar, after TPW takes their break. I’m hardly saying I won’t be apart of those when things kick back into gear.”
Cindy looks up from petting PD just behind her ears, where her neck meets her surely thick skull. “Good, because I don’t think any of the Thunderamaniacs expect you to be absent from them on the card,” she gives a wink, prompting him to give a lopsided grin. “Speaking of rivalries, you’ve got one of your own feature bout coming up at Thunder in Paradise.”
“Yes, it’s going to be a good measure of where I’m at, following those other matches,” Larry takes a reflective few moments to contemplate the next battle, imminently approaching. “Tony Savage is going to be coming in for his first TPW Pay-Per-View match, and he decided he wanted me to be the one standing across the ring.”
“It’ s a big opportunity for you. Tony managed to beat you twice in UGWC to retain the Conquest Title. There’s a little redemption to be gained there,” she points out to her husband, who gives another grunt. “Where did he go after leaving UGWC?”
“He hasn’t been around as much on the wrestling scene, but he’s running boxing events and even pulling in some crossover appeal with names like Atara Raven taking part,” Larry thinks on the box office appeal that Tony carries with him everywhere he goes. “There’s no doubt this is a big match. I’ve really got to put my best foot forward at Thunder in Paradise. It could set the course for a big run after the summer. Solving the Tony Savage puzzle would be a big step.”
“You’ve got all the tools to do it, hon,“ Cindy assures him. “You need to remember how you got things to click together since the last matches with Tony. Obviously, those losses didn’t set you back, because it was only a couple months later that you won WrestleStock, and became TPW International Champion.” She gives him a peck on the cheek. “I believe you know what you need to do. You just need to embrace it for yourself.”
Draining his water glass, Larry turns and gives his wife a brief kiss on the lips. “I sure am glad you got your ‘hooks’ in me,” he smirks.
“I’m glad I got to add my own take on the ‘conversation’ between you and Amber. If she thinks she can make everyone else the problem, she’s already losing her touch. Another receipt for you to redeem, but one at a time. This isn’t Supermarket Sweep,” she gives a look of relishing the next few months. “We’re going to show them all that you’re not going to be held back by stale feelings.” She pauses, shaking her head, then looks at Larry. “Show her how little she knows you.”
“All in time…” Larry stands and walks over to the kitchen, placing the glass on the counter. “I’m going to check some film.”
A few minutes later, Larry pulls out his phone and watches back a replay of a scene sent to him by TPW production. He’s standing in front of a promotional banner for Friday Night Fury, dressed in a navy blue suit and slacks, with the same lavender shirt on underneath, and a striped blue tie accenting the attire. Larry has his hands crossed over his chest.
“It’s been a long time, hasn’t it, Tony? Almost a year, and a lot changes in that time. I don’t have to mince words about what happened the last one-on-one matches we had, almost consecutively. You bested me and took my hopes for the Conquest Title with you. Left me in the dust, but you know, I’ve certainly gotten the wind at my back again since then. I’ve been making moves, winning titles, and entered into matches that some would consider best of the year candidates. In TPW, where you want to face me next at Thunder in Paradise, you should go back and check the tape on what I did to Bam Miller. Spoiler: He hasn’t been seen in a ring since that match. Check on what happened to El Diablo Blanco, in our Chairs match. He took my hair, and I gave him a steel makeover. Do you think I’m the same as I was in our last encounter? If you do, I’ll be introducing a humble reality to your point of view, beginning at Friday Night Fury.”
He smirks, opening his arms up at his sides.
“But that isn’t all the THUNDERAMANIACS will be getting! As great as our match at ‘TIP3’ will be, Fury will throw in a couple of other newcomers. I guess it makes sense, since I am #TPWSTRONG and the one who’s looking to maintain my stance near the top of the rankings. All the more fitting that I show what the best of TPW offers. We don’t need any introductions or basic trash talk. The #Tactfacts are the man of every hour of television he’s apart of is Larry Tact. While I respect new talent, and know you can make a run at anytime? I have to say, I’m just a little bit more momentum driven at this point in time. I’m curious to see what you do here in TPW, but at the moment, I’m on a mission to show Larry is ready to assume a new Throne.”
