“How did they find us?”
“I don’t know.”
Nova watches Lycana pace back and forth, practically wearing a path in the plush carpeting that adorned the floor of the guest bedroom they were currently ensconced in.
“I had a friend ward the house against locator spells. Kaiya... I mean, Arcana, shouldn’t have been able to find us. Even out in the woods.”
“Maybe they failed?”
“No, Cate would have been able to tell.” Lycana shakes her head. “And Arcana is powerful, yeah. She’s helped me find people without anything to go on except a name, like Alias once... but... she shouldn’t have been able to get by these. Not ones by Cate.”
Nova shrugs slightly, her gaze moving to the moon peeking in the window, beyond the sheer drapes. She sighs softly. Her world had gone to complete chaos in such a short amount of time. She had thought that the time after father had died was the lowest point. Then came the plane crash and loss of her mother and brother, plunging her back into the darkness.
And now this.
Whatever this was.
Just level forty-six of insanity.
Nova idly wonders what awaits her on the boss level.
How did one process stuff like this? At least with death, there is an absolute. There was nothing about to change to add onto the drama unless it was some skeletons being yanked from closets or what have you. But to find that the world not only had magic, and weird beings, and a whole different plane of existence...
And then finding out your friend was actually a werewolf along with being a witch.
And THEN finding out that you yourself, indeed might have some special talents.
And that there was essentially a bounty put on your head.
It was a bit much.
She glances around the room from her position, seated cross legged on the bed. It was very elegant and plush. A tad on the masculine side with the heavy dark wooden furniture pieces and slashes of burgundy color, but it was comfortable. It matched their host, Dion, she had met only for the barest of moments before Lycana had swept her up the stairs to where she would be sleeping.
“So now what? Are we safe here?”
“For the time being I hope. I don't think she would risk coming here. But the best thing to do is to keep moving just in case. At least until I can figure out some way to put a stop to this.”
“I have to be in Florida on Friday.”
Lycana stops dead, one foot still in the air as her head swivels around, her body slowly following as she eyes Nova. Her eyes narrow as the woman on the bed fiddles her hands in her lap instead of making eye contact. “What do you mean by that?”
For a moment Nova doesn’t move, then she lifts her face up, tilting her chin upwards, her eyes flashing a steely glint.
“I’m facing Jay.”
“The HELL you are!” Lycana gapes at Nova. “Are you crazy? No... really... I mean that. Don’t you recall what happened on the LAST SHOW? Hell... what's happened in the last few days?”
“He took my dog!”
“He’s gonna take your life!” Lycana shakes her head, swiping a hand through her unruly sapphire hair. “I swear that you just go looking for trouble. Why the hell would you put yourself in harm's way?!”
“He took my dog.” Nova repeats.
“Of all the stubborn... stupid... idiotic...” Lycana grumbles. “There's more to it than that. I know you. You always have to prove yourself.” She sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose, her eyelids drifting shut as her body sags a little. “I can’t be there to help you Nova. I need to meet with... people. I had planned for you to be with me. If you do this, you're on your own.”
“It's a risk I have to take Ly.”
“You already have a target on your back, I don’t understand why you'd make it bigger.” Lycana pads across the carpet to the door, pausing. “Get some rest. We leave as soon as the sun comes up.”
With that, she is gone, shutting the door quietly behind her.
Nova scoots up on the bed and shimmies under the covers, settling her head on the pile of pillows, her gaze seeking out the moon once more.
It was probably folly to do this.
No, not probably, it was.
But she couldn’t help the burning feeling of anger and helplessness that coursed throughout her blood whenever Jay C. Phoenix was around. He drew her ire like a moth to the flame. He had had a hand in things that had happened recently, turning her world upside down, and for that she owed him.
And she owed it to herself.
She owed it to herself to make him pay to ease her own demons.
Who knows what they had done to her poor Charlie. Tears spring to her eyes at the thought. “I miss you.” she whispers, hoping that somehow, if she got the message into the celestial world it would reach his ears. She would never abandon him, not as long as there was breath in her body.
First Phoenix would pay in that ring.
And then she would make him pay out of it too... and get her damn dog back too.
No matter what it took.
Nova cuddles down in the bed, and closes her eyes, seeking sleep.
