Hello everyone, Olive here, and welcome to episode two? Yep, two, of Sykobitty Exposed. I guess this has kinda become one of those I see something on the Twixxer machine with a bunch of questions and I give my answers in this format. Kinda gives you a bit of insight about me I think. Now today’s topic is something near and dear to me, and it’s music.
For some background, for those who may not know me or my real life situation, I am in what they call a throuple. Call it a threesome, whatever, but I’ve kinda come to feel as I’ve got older that the word threesome has more of a sexual connotation and we’re definitely more than that. So the bosslady of the house is Adriana. Itty-bitty thing, she’s a half-inch shorter than even me, but she’s the backbone of the outfit. Even the girls at home know Addy’s the one they have to answer to, but she’s totally a sweetheart. Addy’s released a few albums now of solo work with the occasional guest appearances by both myself and our other wife. I’ll post the album covers here for you and you can check them out wherever you get your streaming music.
The heart of the household is Katra, guitarist extraordinaire for the band American Murder Log. And shh, between you and I, she’s a pretty good singer as well though she gets super shy when I bring it up and it’s so adorable. Here are the AML albums you can check out as well, as well as an instrumental album Katra put out with a bunch of her favorite riffs and stuff she’s come up with over time.
As for me, I’ve put out a solo album and an EP with a cover band we put together during the pandemic called the Sirens of Valhalla. Looked considerably different at the time as I look at these album covers again.
I don’t fancy myself a singer, I can play solid rhythm with Katra, she’s the Hammett to my Hetfield. I can gush for hours, and I almost guarantee they’ll come up in this list a couple of times. So buckle up, and let’s go through these thirty questions about songs, I’m guessing, that connect to me to some level. And hopefully some will connect with you, so let’s jump into it.
1. A song you like with a color in the title
Haha, I’ve actually been in the studio working on this song. A family affair actually. Adriana and I on vocals, Katra and I on guitars, and my daughter Emileigh on piano. The song is Alice In Chains’ “Black Gives Way To Blue”
2. A song you like with a number in the title
I only just learned the meaning behind this song, and that’s “30/30-150” by Stone Sour. The story I heard is 30/30 was Corey Taylor’s pant size and 150 was his weight. Just goes to show that creativity can come from anywhere and anything.
3. A song that reminds you of summertime
Poop, any Chili Peppers song. They sound like a walk along the Santa Monica pier, I swear, and it’s always sunny out there so they fit. If I have to pick one though, “Scar Tissue”.
4. A song that reminds you of someone you would rather forget about
I’ve been fortunate that most of my exes and I get along and are still good friends today. Some friendships took some time to reestablish, but I’ve always been of the belief that just because me and whoever didn’t work out, doesn’t mean we’re bad people. We just weren’t compatible. A couple of my exes, though? Total trash. So, for them, and they know who they are, “abcdefu” by Gayle.
5. A song that needs to be played LOUD
Anything by American Murder Log! Actually, lately I’ve gone on a Ghost kick, so whenever the live version of “Mary On A Cross” comes on, I crank it up.
6. A song that makes you want to dance
I’m actually NOT a fan of the song, but damn it, everytime I hear it on the radio, I can’t help myself. “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. That and “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars, though I admittedly really like his stuff.
7. A song to drive to
GIVE ME FUEL, GIVE ME FIRE, GIVE ME THAT WHICH I DESIRE! “Fuel” by Metallica.
8. A song about drugs or alcohol
Okay, story time. Back in 2006, a young fifteen-year-old me had just found out she was pregnant. I was watching MTV one day, back when it still played music videos, and I got totally sucked into everything about the song “Call Me When You’re Sober” by Evanescence. Cursing the boy who knocked me up, and falling in love with everything Amy Lee. the gothy-ish look, the voice, her eyes, her, well, everything. Loved her so much, it’s why I named my daughter Emileigh. Sure, these days she prefers her name to be pronounced Emily, but I’m probably one of few who can call her Amy.
9. A song that makes you happy
Going to go with a classic for this answer because, as a fan, it’s a hugely bombastic song. As a musician, you can’t avoid being in awe of how they put the song and its arrangements together. I’ve watched a documentary on Youtube, I think it was, where they talk about how they layered so many takes into that song back in the seventies when it was considerably harder to do. Also, I mean, it’s Freddie Fuding Mercury, easily top three favorite singers of mine. Oh, yeah, the song is “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Still one of my favorite songs of all-time.
10. A song that makes you sad
So, over the years, I was less a fan of what was popular in the moment, I liked classic music. Still do. While this song initially came out in 2002 and I was eleven, I remember seeing my Daddy brought to tears over it, and my older brothers… maybe not griping about it so much as shocked that a song they grew up listening to had a newfound reverence from another’s voice. If you get a chance, even if you never heard a Johnny Cash song in your life, go find his video for “Hurt”. If it doesn’t well you up, your heart’s got something wrong with it.
11. A song that you never get tired of
Okay, I get to show a bit of my sappy side here. So, back in 2017, I get invited to a birthday party by a new friend I’d met named Seleana. While I’m there, I’m kinda shy but I see this beautiful blonde woman who is probably even more shy than I am. Until you put a guitar in her hand and she just opens up so large but I’m kinda getting ahead of myself. She’d just come to the US from Sweden. Very broken English, but I was already starting to melt over her. We exchanged numbers, we’d talk once in awhile, I secretly started taking lessons to speak Swedish. And a couple of weeks in, she invites me down to hear her band play. And they’re working on this song called “Lost In Your Eyes” which I was told was written about me. The band I went to see? American Murder Log. The songwriter? Katra. The rest is history.
12. A song from your preteen years
Haha, is this where I out myself by saying the first favorite band I had was The Cranberries, thanks to my older brothers? I mean, how could you not be drawn to Dolores O'Riordan’s voice? It was so different, yet so raw and filled with conviction. Coincidentally, my Devils’ Dove sister used my favorite song of theirs as her nickname after hearing the Bad Wolves’ cover of it. That song is “Zombie”.
13. One of your favorite 80's songs
I’ll admit I didn’t get into this band until I was in my late teens, early twenties, but if you’re an Irish lass like me, and even if you’re not, eventually you come across a U2 song that touches you. Most of their stuff is hit or miss with me but I will listen to Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum and Achtung Baby on occasion. Most of their stuff after that I’m not a fan of. Bono singing Beatles songs in the Across The Universe movie though is actually really good. “All I Want Is You” was my song for Katra when we first dated and subsequently married the first time.
14. A song that you would love played at your wedding
Honestly, this might be the first question I can't answer because I don't have a wedding song. Never have, never will. I know, shocking, being the music geek I am. I just think a lot of the love songs people use are cheesy, it’s just not my thing.
15. A song that is a cover by another artist
So I brought up Cash earlier and he has a lot of songs he covered in his later years with Rick Rubin so I won't use him again. One of my favorite covers, though, is from a YouTuber in Brazil named Violet Orlandi. She covered Death Cab For Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" which is really really good. What do you know, I do like some modern-ish stuff. And a love song. Huh.
16. One of your favorite classical songs
“Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven. Ha, bet you weren’t expecting me to be cultured enough to like classical music. To be fair, I like it because Emileigh learned to play it and that was the first time I actually listened to the piece. It’s really beautiful.
17. A song that would sing a duet with on karaoke
Addy and I did this a few months ago. The family and I all went out to dinner and on the bar side, they had karaoke set up. We did "Break In" by Halestorm and Amy Lee. Probably not as good as they do, but the crowd loved it.
18. A song from the year that you were born
"Civil War", Guns N Roses. I actually got the Illusion albums as a 20th birthday present as we're the same age within a matter of weeks. They're still on my playlist today.
19. A song that makes you think about Iife
My love of classic music returns! One of my favorite bands of all time is Pink Floyd. After The Wall and Waters Fuding off only to return years later, claim the name, and I hear he's thinking of re-releasing The Wall in his vision which… Fudge off. However, the Division Bell album, I think the first album fronted by Gilmour, don't quote me on that, but there were a few really solid tracks on it. One of them hit me in the feels called "High Hopes". Personally one of my favorites.
20. A song that has many meanings to you
“Breaking The Habit” by Linkin Park because of how many times it’s come into my life at different parts of it. I handled putting Emi up for adoption by self-harming. I’ve been on and off drugs and alcohol for years and am now sober. I use to run from my problems because it was easier than facing them. Each time I had to fight myself to stop those behaviors, breaking the habits if you will, that was the motivating song. When Chester died, I was pissed. It was like ‘how can you sing a song about breaking habits only to fall to them’. I was angry as someone trying to stay on the straight and narrow, and yet scared shitless as an addict. It was like Fudge, if it can take him, it can easily take me. So, yeah.
21. A favorite song with a person's name in the title
There’s a band in Canada called the Barenaked Ladies. Initially I was a bit disappointed when I saw the sign in a bar in Toronto advertising them, and walking in to see a bunch of male musicians with clothes on BUT it was music so I thought I’d stick around and check them out. And they wrote a song called “Brian Wilson” about, well, Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. It’s a very eclectic song but really good.
22. A song that moves you forward
Hey, I went twenty-two questions before bringing up wrestling, I’m impressed with myself. Honestly, my entrance song, “This Is My War” by Five Finger Death Punch. Years back, I appeared in their video for “House Of The Rising Sun” and got to know the band and they’re all really cool guys. Ivan is a sweetheart even with that rough exterior and Fudge-you attitude. When I heard War, I was at that point in my life where I was trying to reconcile my past and redeem myself and I messaged Ivan and was like ‘dude, This Is My War is so me right now’ and he got a kick out of that. I used “Judgement Day” recently but went back to “This Is My War” because it symbolizes everything I fight for.
23. A song that you think everybody should listen to
Man, that’s a tough one because music is subjective. Not everyone is going to have the same tastes. Not everyone is going to take away the same message, or they'll interpret a melody differently, a lyric different. However, I saved this song for this answer instead of the cover question from earlier. “Sound Of Silence” by Disturbed. It’s a great classic song tonally different to reflect the society of today. Listen as the song builds its way up with every verse and then that aural release. It’s a phenomenal cover, on par with Cash’s version of “Hurt” in my opinion.
24. A song by a band you wish were still together
I think I’m on a cover kick because I’m about to mention one. “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” by Nirvana. I was born when the grunge movement started so I missed out on this as a wee thing but, of course, being a fan of 80s and 90s music mainly, of course I got into Nirvana somewhat. I gravitated more to other bands in the genre, but hearing Cobain belt this song at the end of their Unplugged show still gives me shivers.
25. A song by an artist no longer living
So, I was just saying I gravitated towards over bands in the grunge genre. I was more into Alice In Chains, and still am, but there was one voice of that genre that’s above all of them, and that’s Chris Cornell. From Soundgarden to Audioslave to his solo stuff, his voice was always captivating. You can’t explain his voice and it’s doubly hard to do his songs justice. It’s hard to pick just one favorite of his, but I’ll go with “Like A Stone”.
26. A song that makes you want to fall in love
Dammit, okay, there’s actually another love song I like and we’re going way back for this one. Moody Blues “Nights In White Satin”. Everything about this song is so surreal and yet heart-swelling. Probably just the way I hear it anyways.
27. A song that breaks your heart
While I referenced Cash earlier, it should be noted that I’m a fan of classic country music. Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings has the most beautiful and probably criminally underrated voices, and Glen Campbell to name a few. When Glen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he knew his career was over, as would his life soon be as well. And he recorded a song, I think maybe his last-ever song called “I’m Not Gonna Miss You”. To hear the loss in his voice, both with age and the fact his memory was fading quickly, it’s hard to listen to but it’s still a very beautiful song.
28. A song by an artist with a voice that you love
Okay, I tried not to double up on artists, but I’m sorry, outside of my wives, my favorite singer is Amy Lee. Now I really REALLY tried but I was listening to a playlist on shuffle and “My Immortal” came on and I swooned and then played it on repeat a couple of times. Then I had to watch the video of her laying on the roof and damn she’s hot and she sings awesomely. So, too bad, that’s my choice for this question.
29. A song that you remember from your childhood
Poop, I didn’t think I was going to end up crying, but my mom who’s not doing too well now, when I was a kid, every night before bed, she’d always sing “You Are My Sunshine” to me. Maybe wasn’t on-key but she put all her love into it and that’s what I remember most. I call her every couple of days and at the end of the call, we all sing it to her. I have a feeling one of these calls will be the last one and I’m not sure I’m ready yet for that to happen.
30. A song that reminds you of yourself
Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”. I’m as much a fighter as I am a lover. I will defend my friends and my family to the death. I will be their shield against the evils of this world. You can hurt me, torture me, break me, but as long as I can still draw breath, I will get back up and I will keep fighting. The nicknames may change, the smiles can fade and the anger could rage, but within the eye of the storm named Sykobitty stands the warrior. And I won’t back down.
For some background, for those who may not know me or my real life situation, I am in what they call a throuple. Call it a threesome, whatever, but I’ve kinda come to feel as I’ve got older that the word threesome has more of a sexual connotation and we’re definitely more than that.
